Senior Accountant | Bay Area, California

Position Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions that support the financial operations of a well-established and growing electrical contracting company. This position ensures the timely and accurate processing of union payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reporting, licensing compliance, and accounting record maintenance.

More importantly, this role serves as a trusted business partner to operations and leadership teams, helping drive financial accuracy, improve processes, support strategic decision-making, and contribute to the continued growth of the organization. As a key resource supporting operational excellence, the Senior Accountant provides timely and accurate financial information that helps leadership make informed business decisions. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and enjoys working in a collaborative environment where they can make a meaningful impact.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Payroll Administration

  • Process weekly union payroll accurately and timely in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and applicable federal, state, and local wage laws.
  • Maintain and update employee payroll and field personnel records.
  • Verify payroll information, deductions, fringe benefits, and other payroll-related transactions.
  • Research and resolve payroll discrepancies.
  • Prepare and submit monthly union reports for multiple jurisdictions.
  • Ensure compliance with union reporting requirements and contractual obligations.
  • Maintain supporting payroll documentation and records for audits.

Accounts Payable

  • Process office overhead and subcontractor invoices.
  • Prepare and process weekly or scheduled overhead check runs.
  • Reconcile vendor statements and investigate vendor inquiries.
  • Maintain accurate accounts payable records.

Accounts Receivable

  • Prepare AIA and progress billings for construction projects.
  • Monitor billing schedules and coordinate with project managers regarding contract billing requirements.
  • Assist with collection efforts as needed.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly management reports and financial schedules.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Analyze financial information and recommend process improvements.
  • Maintain accounting records in accordance with company policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Other Responsibilities

  • Coordinate insurance certificate requests for customers and projects.
  • Process business license and contractor license renewals.
  • Maintain organized accounting files and supporting documentation
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.
  • Support internal and external audits
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives to increase efficiency and internal controls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Five to ten plus (5-10+) years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction, electrical contracting, or another project-based industry.
  • Experience with union payroll and construction accounting is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting best practices.

  • Knowledge of payroll regulations and union reporting requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

Computer Skills

Proficiency with:

  • Foundation Construction Accounting Software
  • Microsoft Excel (advanced proficiency preferred)
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Construction accounting experience.
  • Experience working with union labor agreements.
  • Experience preparing AIA billing packages.
  • Knowledge of contractor licensing and insurance certificate administration.
